2023 U.S.-Booked Air Volume: $153 million
Consolidated U.S. TMC: CWT
BTN estimates Meta, parent company of Facebook, spent $153 million on U.S.-booked air travel for employees in 2023.
The company is currently piloting a program in which an internal dynamic value for carbon emissions is determined and assessed during the air travel search process and displayed to travelers at the time of booking.
Meta uses its booking tool to inform employees of more sustainable routes or aircraft types. Employees are also encouraged to meet virtually when possible and travel by train for short trips. Business travel accounted for 4 percent of Meta’s 2023 Scope 3 carbon footprint.
Meta also is a founding member of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance and has purchased nearly 2.5 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel certificates since 2021.
The tech giant reported total revenue of $134.9 billion in 2023, up 16 percent from the prior year, while its global workforce decreased by 22 percent to 67,300 employees following widespread layoffs.
